Description

Giving birth is a remarkable and miraculous journey that brings new life into the world, but it can also place significant strain on the body, especially the perineum. As your baby makes its way through the birth canal, the surrounding tissues stretch to accommodate their passage. You might wonder, โ€œHow on earth are my lady bits going to stretch that much?โ€ Rest assured, they can and they will! Our bodies are designed for this incredible process. The vaginal walls are lined with folds called rugae, particularly in the lower third of the vagina, which allow for expansion during childbirth and then retract afterward. Additionally, the perineal tissue is thin for a reasonโ€”imagine if it were as thick as the skin on our abdomen; there would likely be far more episiotomies performed to assist in delivery. The fact of the matter is, up to 80% of first-time mothers experience some degree of tearing, and itโ€™s important to remember that this is a completely normal part of the birthing process. Embracing this reality can help mothers trust their bodies when itโ€™s time to push, allowing them to focus on their healing journey and the beautiful new chapter of motherhood that lies ahead. With the Perineal Recovery Herbal Soak, thoughtfully crafted from natureโ€™s best healing herbs to reduce swelling, promote cell regeneration, relieve pain, and minimize scarring, you can rest assured that any tearing will heal more quickly and comfortably.^

How does it work?

Witch Hazel, with its cooling, astringent, and antimicrobial properties, is especially beneficial when thereโ€™s heat and tissue laxity, such as swelling, redness, bruising, or infection. Witch hazel is particularly noted for its topical astringent effects, making it ideal for addressing varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and edema in the legs and extremities.

Ladyโ€™s Mantle, A powerful styptic, has been used for centuries as a healing herb for wounds. Its tannins help bind wounds and slow or stop bleeding, while its natural salicylates provide relief from pain and inflammation. Ladyโ€™s mantle is also known for its ability to reduce vaginal inflammation (vaginitis) and can be helpful for conditions that cause discharge (leucorrhea).

Yarrow, known for its powerful healing properties, can be applied to hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and blood blisters, making it a great addition to after-birth sitz bath blends. Itโ€™s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, helping to reduce swelling and prevent infection. As a styptic, yarrow also helps stop bleeding, supporting faster recovery.

Plantain is a powerful vulnerary plant that accelerates cell regeneration and speeds up the healing process for wounds. Additionally, it soothes pain, stinging, and itching from abrasions, offering comfort and relief.

Comfrey is an incredibly effective wound healer, known for its ability to help with sprains, breaks, burns, scrapes, and cutsโ€”anything that requires tissues to โ€œknitโ€ back together. Rich in allantoin, a compound that accelerates the growth of new skin cells, comfrey promotes quick surface healing. However, because of its potency, it should not be used on deep wounds, as it can heal the surface too quickly, potentially trapping infection inside.

Willow Bark, traditionally known for its pain-relieving properties, is also anti-inflammatory, cooling, and astringent. Its astringency is particularly useful when applied to weepy wounds or areas where fluid has accumulated, such as hemorrhoids and varicose veins, helping to reduce swelling and discomfort.

St. Johnโ€™s Wort, when applied topically, accelerates healing by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing scarring. It is known to restore nerve tissue and effectively aids in healing soft tissue damage, making it a gentle yet powerful ally in your recovery journey.

dosage

Dosage

Not to be taken internally.

Perineal Wash (Peri Bottle):

The most practical way to use this herbal soak is as a perineal wash. Fill your peri bottle halfway with warm water and the other half with the herbal infusion. Use it to rinse the perineum during and after each trip to the bathroom to ease any burning sensation. Studies suggest that frequent contact with the herbs (rather than just one sitz bath a day) can promote faster tissue healing.

ย

Sitz bath:

Fill the bath with warm water and add the herbal preparation in equal parts. Sit down, making sure all sensitive areas are submerged, and relax for 15-20 minutes or until the water cools.

ย

Herbal Compress:

After preparing your herbal soak, save the marc (plant material). You can wrap some of it in soft gauze and place it on top of your postpartum pad for continuous contact with the healing herbs. For perineal tears, limit use to 15-20 minutes at a time, as keeping the area dry helps with quicker healing and reduces the risk of infection.

ย

Bath:

For a soothing, bonding experience, fill the bathtub with warm water and the herbal infusion, put on some calming music, and enjoy a bath with your baby. Wait a few days to do this, however, to avoid removing the protective vernix from your newborn.
