Description
Elderberries, widely recognized today for their ability to prevent and slow flu viral replication, have been revered by healers and scholars since as early as 400 BC. Packed with polyphenols and anthocyanidins, these potent berries owe their rich blue, purple, and red colors to these powerful compounds. But their benefits go far beyond their beautiful hue. These antioxidants actively support and boost immune function, helping the body fight off various infections. Whether you eat elderberry syrup on pancakes, mixed in yogurt, in a smoothie, or taken by the spoonful, elderberries offer a natural way to protect and nourish your body.
During the immediate postpartum recovery period, our body is primarily focused on recovering after the enormous task of childbirth. We have to heal the wound where our body once grew a new organ, we have to replenish our nutrient stores after the marathon event that is growing and birthing a new human, and we have to produce milk to sustain the new life that we created. There are a lot of important tasks going on at once! With so much energy being devoted to recovery, it’s natural to be more susceptible to illness during this time. Taking elderberry syrup at the first sign of a cold can help protect both you and your loved ones, giving your immune system the extra support it needs.^

How does it work?
Elderberries stimulate the immune system, calling to action B and T cells to increase the body’s defense mechanisms to rid it of colds and other viruses much faster. Some studies have even found it to be antimicrobial against human pathogenic bacteria (S. pyogenes and B. catarrhalis, pathogens which are known to cause upper respiratory tract infections). This is especially helpful when we’re feeling stressed out, overworked, under-slept, or are traveling as these are all things that decrease our bodies defenses. Elderberries also help to regulate fluids, ensuring to keep lymph moving the crud that accumulates in our bodies when we’re sick. These powerful berries contain antioxidants which help our body to protect itself from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can eventually lead to cell death and the deterioration in function of our tissues and organs. In addition to the immune-boosting and antioxidant properties of elderberries, this syrup combines other supportive herbs to provide more comprehensive support for keeping your body strong and healthy.
The elderberry syrup at Roots to Tonics has been thoughtfully formulated with additional herbs like Rose Hips and Orange Peel, both known for their high Vitamin C content. When taken daily, Vitamin C helps reduce the chances of catching colds and flu, and it can even shorten the duration of infection by up to 8% in adults and 14% in children. Ginger, with its pungent and warming profile, is a wonderful ally for combating fevers, chills, body aches and digestive upset. It encourages the body to mount a strong fever when needed. Lastly, Cinnamon and Clove are not only antimicrobial, but their warming qualities also help to ease tension and provide emotional comfort when we’re feeling ill, allowing the medicine to work more deeply in the body.
With these warming, stimulating, and relaxing herbs, not only is our Elderberry Syrup an effective herbal remedy, but one that tastes amazing, too!
